Amazon CEO Andy Jassy has officially confirmed that the company’s long-awaited satellite internet service—now rebranded from “Project Kuiper” to Amazon Leo—is on track to go live by the middle of 2026. In his annual letter to shareholders, Jassy expressed confidence that the service is “on the verge” of becoming a major player in the global broadband market, directly challenging Elon Musk’s Starlink.
Integration with the Amazon Ecosystem A key differentiator for Leo will be its deep integration with Amazon Web Services (AWS). Jassy highlighted that the satellite network will allow government and enterprise clients to seamlessly move data for AI processing, storage, and analytics. This cloud-first approach is intended to give Amazon an edge in the business sector, where it has already secured major commitments.
Strategic Partnerships and Growth While Starlink currently leads with a massive constellation, Amazon is rapidly scaling its infrastructure:
- High-Profile Clients: Delta Air Lines has already signed on to bring Leo-powered Wi-Fi to 500 aircraft starting in 2028. Other early partners include JetBlue, AT&T, Vodafone, and NASA.
- Performance Targets: Amazon claims Leo will offer significantly faster speeds than current competitors, with the “Ultra” package potentially reaching download speeds of up to 1 Gbps.
- Closing the Digital Divide: Despite a heavy focus on enterprise, Jassy reiterated that providing affordable broadband to underserved rural communities remains a primary mission.
The Road Ahead With approximately 200 satellites currently in orbit and thousands more planned, Amazon faces the ambitious task of meeting FCC deadlines to launch half of its intended constellation by July 2026. To hit these targets, the company has secured a record-breaking number of launch contracts with providers like ULA, Blue Origin, and even its rival, SpaceX.
As the service moves from private testing to public beta, the competition between Bezos and Musk is expected to intensify, potentially lowering costs and increasing internet accessibility for millions of users worldwide.
